Delivery Truck Crashes Into Miami Home

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The driver of a delivery truck died after he crashed into a Miami duplex.

Sheilet Green, who lives in the duplex at 1794 NW 54th Street, said she was asleep in her bedroom with her boyfriend when the box truck slammed into her living room around 6 a.m.

"I got up in a panic and tried to get out the other door because we were barricaded in," said Green who estimated they were sleeping about three feet way from where the truck hit.

Green said if the truck hadn't hit her boyfriend's car first, it may have gone into the room where they were.

"I was in shock. We are so far from the street, so we're not expecting that and for a truck to be in our house, it's tragic," said Green.

Green said when she and her boyfriend ran outside to check on the driver, they found him unconscious at the wheel, his foot still on the gas pedal.

"When rescue and police officers arrived the wheels were still turning, so it leads us to believe he most likely passed out behind the wheel unfortunately," said Miami Police spokesman Rene Pimentel.

Police have identified the driver as 45-year old Julio Gomez. He was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Gomez reportedly had a medical condition and had experienced chest pains the day before. His family said he was sent home from work Monday. Tuesday he decided to go back to work.

"Shortly after he loaded up his truck and was about to leave the establishment, he attempted to make a U-turn and at this point we believe he may have had a heart attack," said Pimentel.

The home received significant damage and deemed unsafe to live in.  Given the damage Green said she felt blessed that she and her boyfriend weren't hurt.

Gomez, whose mother recently passed away, leaves behind a 15-year old daughter.
