County Shelter Takes Part In "No Kill" Day

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Broward County's two animal shelters are just saying 'No'.

As part of "Just One Day", a nationwide effort founded by No Kill Nation to help find homes for shelter animals, the county will not euthanize any animals Monday in their two shelters. Instead, they will host a pair of adoption events to help find homeless pets new families.

The events, which will run until 2 p.m., are taking place at the Government Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale and Government Center West, One North University Drive, Plantation.

This event supplements the resolution Broward County Commissioners passed in April with the goal of becoming a No Kill Community.

In working towards becoming a No Kill Community, the county's animal services department is coming up with programs to increase adoptions, stressing the importance of spaying and neutering animals and working with shelters in other states to take adoptable animals.

In no-kill communities, animals which are sick can still be put to sleep. The overall kill rate can drop to as low as 10 percent compared to 50 percent in communities which have not adopted the policy.

Florida's only other no-kill county is Manatee, just south of Tampa.
