Coronavirus Prompts Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez To Expand Restrictions Across County
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Strict social distancing is the phrase of the day as officials try to stem the spread of coronavirus.
On Wednesday, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez signed an executive order prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people in any park, beach or recreational facility owned and operated by the county.
This emergency order also recommends that people practice social distancing and stay at least six feet away from another person "for all gatherings of 10 or fewer people."
This order does not apply to parks owned or operated by municipalities.
Later in the day, Gimenez announced he would be signing another executive order that will restrict or close non-essential retail, private educational facilities, casinos and other recreational and entertainment activities.
The mayor's statement read, in part:
"Along with an extension of the declaration of emergency, this comprehensive order will facilitate compliance by the residents, visitors and business owners in Miami-Dade County. These actions are necessary to keep our community safe from the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring the continuity of essential services. These restrictions will be effective throughout Miami-Dade County, and will include all municipal facilities, such as parks and beaches."
This new executive order will go into effect Thursday evening.
Gimenez urges everyone to follow recommendations from the Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reduce the transmission of the virus.
