Child Dead After Being Struck By a Car in Hollywood

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A boy is dead after being struck by a car in Hollywood.

It happened Monday night on SW 22nd Avenue near Freedom Street, in a residential neighborhood just west of Dixie Highway.

Tuesday afternoon there was a makeshift memorial of flowers, balloons, and a teddy bear on the sidewalk near where the six-year-old boy was hit.

"It's just so sad about the little boy is gone," said Twin Richardson who lives in the neighborhood. "I'm just heartbroken, just so heartbroken, that the little baby is gone."

Several people who live in the neighborhood told CBS4 the boy was crossing the street with friends when a driver hit him near Freedom Street, across from Chester Byrd Park.

"When officers arrived, they made contact with the driver who remained on scene and rendered aid to the pedestrian," said police spokesman Christian Lata.

"He went like this," said Richardson while motioning with her fingers as if to check for a pulse. "I just know the driver doesn't drive fast so I'm still at a loss for how this could happen."

Richardson said she knows the driver who hit the boy, she and the police are calling it an accident.

"I'm pretty sure it was an accident. It's just heartbreaking that a baby is gone," she said.

Police said they are still investigating the crash and at this time it does not appear that any charges will be filed against the driver.
