Central Florida Voters May Force Dog Injuries To Be Reported

ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) — Sometimes it's up to those who are able to speak up for those who are not.

Voters in a Central Florida county may vote on whether to require a local dog track owner to disclose injuries suffered by greyhound dogs.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that animal activists have collected enough signatures to place the issue before Seminole County voters.

If it passes it would require the Sanford Orlando Kennel Club to publicly report injuries and report what happens to dogs after they stop racing, including whether the dogs have been euthanized or adopted.

But the newspaper reports that the Seminole County Commission is expected sue over the ballot initiative.

County commissioners maintain that dog racing is regulated by the state and that a county ordinance would be pre-empted by state law.

Animal activists for several years have tried to get the Florida Legislature to pass a state law that would require reporting on greyhound injuries.
