BSO: Man Jumps Over Counter & Runs Away With Fistful Of Cash

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) –  Upset over the price of cookies, police are looking for a man who jumped the counter of a sub shop and ran away with a fistful of cash.

Joaquin Zapata, according to Broward Sheriff's Office, was working at a Subway when he noticed a man enter the store and "suspiciously" pace back and forth around 10:24 PM on May 1st.

The man, police say, picked out a soda and some chips but eventually put them back before approaching the register.

The suspect asked Zapata how much the cookies cost—and then complained about the price.

The man then took a dollar out of his pocket, gave it to Zapata, but when the register was open, the man jumped over the counter.

Randy Kampert was right next to him by the counter.  When he realized a robbery was unfolding, he sprang into action.

"It was like he was swimming, he was actually hanging over the counter, going for the cash register," recalled Kampert.  "I tried to grab him and his legs were kicking , he just squirmed his way out of that."

While the crook, the clerk, and Kampert were all struggling, a woman, who does not want to be identified, was eating her sandwich a few feet way.  She made a mad dash for the door.

"I didn't' want to take part in it!  Not for me!" she said. "My life was too much more valuable than to speculate if the individual had a gun."   But she did run into him again.  Zapata fought until the robber broke free and ran away with fistful of five dollar bills, police said.  When he got outside, she told that diner why he did it.  "He did state that he was homeless and needed the money," she said.

Kampert said he exchanged glances with the robber, just before he ran away.

"He just kind of looked at me and went like this," he said shrugging, "like he didn't get what he wanted."

He got away with less than 50 dollars.

The suspect ran eastbound toward the back of the shopping center and then continued to run north, witnesses told police.

Detectives are looking for a white male, approximately 5'6" tall with a think build and tattoos covering both his arms and neck.

At the time of the crime, he was wearing a white button-up shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
