Brewers Manager Not Faulting Braun For Gaffe

MIAMI (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke came to Ryan Braun's defense Sunday over the baserunning blunder that cost their team a run in Saturday's 2-1 loss at Miami.

Gomez was thrown out at third base trying to advance from first on a single for the final out of the sixth inning, which prevented Braun from scoring from second on the play. Braun was several feet from crossing the plate when Gomez was tagged out. After the game, Gomez said Braun should have run harder and scored.

Roenicke disagreed.

"I saw the replays, and Braun wasn't going to score," Roenicke said. "If he goes 100 percent, it's probably going to be a little closer at home plate, but he was still quite a ways away."

Gomez said he had no regrets about his aggressive play. But Roenicke said Gomez realized he made a mistake.

"I've seen a lot of replays on it, and when he gets back out in the outfield, he's mad," Roenicke said. "If a guy knows he messes up, there's no need for me to now reinforce it. You know you messed up; I know you messed up."
