Bicyclist Killed In Collision With Van In Tamarac

TAMARAC (CBSMiami) – An 82-year-old father and grandfather of 19 was killed Monday while riding a bike in Tamarac.

Oscar G. Aleman, an avid bicyclist in the area, was struck just before 8:30 a.m. when he collided with a van.

The accident happened on McNab Road and NW 70 Avenue.

Aleman, according to BSO, was riding his bike across McNab Road when he was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Express driven by Serge Gharakhanian, 45, of Coral Springs who was traveling eastbound.

Aleman was treated at the scene by Tamarac Fire Rescue and then transported by air to Broward Health Medical Center, according to Broward Sheriff's Office, but died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Aleman's wife, Belen Aleman, said her husband was an avid cyclist, always riding his bike around Tamarac.

"Everyday he rode two to three times," said 57-year-old Belen.

Aleman and his wife left Cuba in 1972 and settled in Chicago. The couple had seven children and a total of 19 grandchildren.

On Sunday the family was together celebrating a birthday.

"He is very much our hero our leader," said Patrick Somboonsap, a grandson of the Alemans. "We lived to please our grandparents. That made us very happy."

A funeral service is planned for Friday morning 11 a.m. At Levitt Weinstein Memorial chapel at 8135 W McNab Rd Tamarac

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
