First Baby Of 2020? Baby Boy Born Just After Midnight At Kendall Regional Medical Center In Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The start of the New Year has seen a bit of a baby boom in South Florida.

Many local hospitals welcomed baby boys and girls born on January 1, 2020.

"I didn't know he was going to be a 2020 baby," said new mother Katherine Sinay.

Her baby, Liam Chavarria, was born at 12:16 a.m. at Kendall Regional Medical Center.

Liam was due before Christmas, but waited until the first of the year to be born – and it was a long labor.

He is believed to be the first South Florida baby born in 2020.

"It's the first time being a mother. I think I'm going to learn something new day by day," said Sinay.

Just minutes after Sinay gave birth, a Hollywood couple welcomed Broward's first 2020 baby.

Leila was born to Ahmed and Sarah at Memorial Regional West Hospital.

She was born at 12:19 a.m., weighing 6 pounds and 11 ounces.

"We were excited the whole time that we were going to have our first child when we first found out," said Sarah, who did not want to use her last name. "But as soon as I was feeling the pain, I just wanted to finish with everything. I wanted her out."

It has been a whirlwind year for the couple, who got married in April and are now first-time parents.

"I'm just hoping she has a good future, a better future. I want her to be able to live her life the best so she can always experience something," said Sarah.

The Sands family is also expanding. Taylor Jaime Sands is their sixth child and the fifth girl.

She was born at Broward Health Medical Center just after 1 a.m.

"They wanted a baby brother but they are excited for their sister," Taylor Jaime's mom said.
