Attorney For Teen Lesbian Wants Judge To Step Down

VERO BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) — The attorney for Kaitlyn Hunt, the 18-year-old charged with a felony for her relationship with a 14-year-old basketball teammate, is asking for the judge to remove himself from the case.

Kaitlyn Hunt was a high school cheerleader and star basketball player in Indian River County before her relationship with another girl came to light.

Hunt was charged with two felony charges of lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 to 16 years old in February.

Attorney Julia Graves filed a motion Monday alleging the case is being singled out because a trial was set before more than 200 other criminal cases and the date is premature.

Her family said police and the younger girl's parents secretly recorded a phone conversation in which the girls discussed kissing in the school bathroom.

Circuit Judge Robert Pegg recently set a trial date for September.

Gay rights advocates say Hunt is being unfairly targeted for a common romance, saying the issue is not about age, but about sexual orientation.
