Five of the most expensive winter homes in the U.S.

Realtor.com

Winter sports aren't cheap, and neither are the places you need to buy to play them.

Skiing and snowboarding in the top spots in the U.S. are expensive to visit, but some of the homes for sale in the areas will truly break the bank. Massive, sprawling estates dot the mountainsides in places all along the Rocky Mountains, and many are not full-time residences for their owners. These are the places the ultra-wealthy go to unwind and enjoy the snow -- for a hefty price tag, sometimes topping $30 million.

While there are plenty of available, more median-priced homes, these are 5 of the most expensive, and impressive, winter mountain homes on the market now.

A $35 million private Aspen estate

This estate, dubbed Star Mountain Ranch, has all the fanciest finishes from French limestone floors to a hand-etched glass shower. The home also has seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, an indoor pool, steam room, hot tub, juice bar and two elevators. The 14,395-square-foot home sits on 66 acres inside a gated community in Aspen, Colo.

A $31.5 million home in Snowmass

Snowmass Village, Colo., is Aspen's pricey sister city, located just west of the famed ski resort spot. It has some of the most expensive homes in the state, including this $31.5 million estate. This six-bedroom, nine-bathroom home sits on a whopping 82 acres, which offer two ponds for swimming (when it's not so cold). The home has all the amenities of most mansions at this price point, from a gym with hot tub to a movie theater with three tiers of seats.

A $38 million home ready to debut

Located high on Buttermilk Mountain, a popular ski area in Aspen, the builders of this property aren't even finished with all its 17,250 square feet, but they're ready to get it on the market. The caretaker unit and stable, which are finished, will connect to a new main residence with two master suites, seven other bedrooms, wine cellar, spa, along with multiple siting rooms, decks and patios.

A $40 million estate with private ski access

This 18,750-square-foot Aspen estate has seven bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, but most importantly, it has ski access to Aspen Mountain, a ski area with plenty of black-diamond hills. After hitting the slopes, owners of the home can relax in their theater, indoor pool and hot tub, bowling alley, target range or bar complete with billiards table and arcade. The home also features two elevators (one that has private access to the master suite), covered outdoor living room, a 30-foot-tall water wall and six-car garage with turntable.

A $44 million estate made of reclaimed Yellowstone Park logs

At least the massive price of this estate affords the buyer a lot of space. The home has 12 bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, and 22,000 square feet of living space over 60 acres overlooking Park City, Utah. The home has two bunk bedrooms featuring 20 mattresses, a dining room that seats all 20, an indoor pool, fitness center, library, children's playrooms and enough garage space for nearly 30 cars.
