Single Mother Shot To Death In Compton, Days After Teen's Body Was Found

COMPTON (CBSLA) — Family and friends Wednesday mourned a single mother who was shot to death in Compton, just days after a missing teenage girl's body was found.

Deputies were called out to the 1700 block of East San Luis Street at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, where they found a woman suffering at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso, authorities said.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was later identified at Monica Abarca.

Friends and family gathered on the street where Abarca died were too distraught to speak on camera, but they said she was a single mother and leaves behind a 12-year-old son.

Sheriff's investigators say she was standing in the street when she was approached by someone who asked her where she was from, before shooting her in the upper torso.

Abarca's death comes just days after the body of 15-year-old Samantha Bustos was found badly beaten in an industrial area of the city.

The family of Abarca says they will hold a vigil for her Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at the site where she was killed.
