Video shows dramatic Mulholland Drive rescue after woman crashes car off cliff in Studio City

Emergency crews on Wednesday morning worked to rescue a woman who was injured after careening off a cliffside in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, authorities said.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the crash was reported around 7:20 a.m. on the windy road of Mulholland Drive, between Skyline and Bowmont drives.

It's not yet clear how the woman crashed, but her vehicle plummeted between 100 and 150 feet down a cliffside, according to the LAFD.

The woman, 30, was airlifted in serious, yet stable condition. Firefighters said she was the one who called 911 after driving over the side of the road. They believe that she survived the crash because of where her car landed.

"Once the vehicle was stabilized, cut the roof and was able to peel the roof back," said LAFD Captain Adam Van Gerpen. "When the vehicle stopped, it rested on top of those two power poles and that created a void space that protected her head."

Aerial images showed the woman being raised into the air via helicopter and severe damage to a guardrail along Mulholland. The vehicle sustained heavy damage in the crash.

Neighbors said that the stretch of Mulholland is commonly referred to as "Dead Man's Curve," and that crashes at the location are common. It's just one part of the scenic road that is known amongst residents in the area for crashes, including "The Snake," which just reopened for the first time in several years last month.

CBS LA has reached out to Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman for comment on the concerns that residents have expressed about Mulholland but has not yet heard back.
