Woman accused of igniting fire at Burbank Target store
The Burbank Police Department arrested a woman who allegedly ignited a fire at a local Target last Sunday.
Officers said the fire started at around 11 p.m. at the Target in the 1800 block of Empire Avenue. When officers and firefighters arrived, they found that all of the customers and employees had safely evacuated.
No one was seriously injured in the fire.
While firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, the blaze caused significant damage to the store and destroyed merchandise. Investigators said the fire caused millions of dollars in damage to the Target location, which remains closed for repairs.
Burbank PD said they determined that 27-year-old Stephanie Irene Mendoza allegedly started the fire in the store's bedding section. They accused Menoza of intentionally starting the fire. Investigators said they did not see anyone else in the bedding section and did not find anything that could have accidentally started the fire.
Officers located her at a nearby hotel and arrested her without incident. She was booked into jail for arson.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Mendoza with one count of arson on April 2.
Burbank PD said its detectives are still investigating the case. They urged anyone with additional information to contact investigators by calling (818) 238-3210.
