Wind-Battered Communities Brace For Potential Flooding, Mudslides

PASADENA (CBS) — Wind-battered communities are bracing for potentially dangerous rainfall as a storm system moves into Southern California.

Officials are concerned that debris-clogged storm drains could trigger flooding and mudslides when heavy rain moves into areas such as the San Gabriel Valley.

Crews are working to clear downed trees, but it will be several weeks before streets and roadways are completely cleared of debris, according to Los Angeles County Public Works spokesperson Bob Spencer.

He confirms the flood control system has been prepared for this week's rain and that additional inspections were conducted over the weekend.

A green flag alert has been issued for Sierra Madre residents, who are in danger of mudslides due to hillsides damaged by the Santa Anita fire.

Kim Smith of J.N. Davis Roofing Company says he received hundreds of calls over the weekend.

"They're saying come help me," he told CBS2. "Basically, people that had their roofs blown off have to be covered."

State and local officials will continue touring Pasadena and other cities Monday to determine if a state of emergency will be declared, which could open up both state and federal funding for repairs.
