Postal Service Honors Veterans With Medal Of Honor Stamp

COSTA MESA ( — The US Postal Service has issued a World War II Medal of Honor stamp.

The West Coast unveiling of the stamp, which depicts the Army and Navy Medals of Honor surrounded by pictures of 12 of the medals' recipients, took place at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

One of the Medal of Honor recipients depicted in the stamp is World War II veteran Walter Ehlers, 92, of Buena Park.

"Well we think it's just a delightful tribute to the Medal of Honor recipients," said Ehlers' daughter, Cathy Metcalf. "We're losing them so rapidly. When this project started, there were 12 surviving Medal of Honor recipients from World War II. As of a week ago, last Monday, we are down to only eight."

Ehlers received the Medal of Honor for acts of heroism while fighting the Germans in the hedge rows of France in 1944.
