Teen Turns His Love For Dogs Into Business Venture
HOUSTON, Tx. (CBS) — A teenager's love for dogs has turned into a business venture as he makes toys for pets a popular item in his community.
Cole Amyx, 13, is a young entrepreneur who makes dog toys for his neighbor's pets. He is often seen running a drill press through a tennis ball, creating his signature toys.
"It just came to me," Amyx said.
The invention came to him after a conversation with his mom when he was just 8-years-old, when pet toys for his dogs were becoming too expensive.
"We were buying toys so I'm like, 'Hey, we can make our own,'" Amyx said.
So the drill press, the tennis balls, a few strips of fleece, a couple of good knots and the "Cole Amyx Slobber Dog Toy" was born.
"I was extremely proud of him," said Amyx mother, Kathleen Amyx.
Cole started selling his dog toys at dog parks, then street fairs, and eventually his own website. To date, he has sold more than 2,000 and each time a dollar is spent it goes to Houston-area shelters to help homeless animals.
"Usually, when I donate, I say it has to go for food first, "Cole said. " Food and water because that's the most important, you know."
