Sushi, Ramen Restaurants To Pay $621K In Back Wages, Damages

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A chain of sushi and ramen restaurants will pay more than $620,000 in back wages and damages after a federal investigation found it cheated chefs and other workers out of overtime pay.

The U.S. Labor Department said Monday that violations by Cerritos-based Gatten Sushi and its sister company GTN impacted nearly 400 workers at 11 restaurants.

Investigators found bosses shaved hours off workers' timecards and docked their pay routinely for 10-minute breaks. Some sushi chefs reported having worked more than 90 hours per week without overtime.

Chefs, servers and kitchen staff will all collect back wages as part of the settlement.
