Is Los Angeles Prepared To Stop Terror Attack Like One In Paris?
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — It took just 20 minutes for terrorists to kill 130 in Paris last November.
Nine terrorists coordinated that sophisticated operation at three locations: a soccer stadium, a concert venue and open-air restaurants.
Is Los Angeles ready for that kind of coordinated attack?
Law enforcement leaders from LA recently traveled to Paris to talk to their French counterparts and investigate the November attacks.
Thursday at USC, they shared what they learned and said there are lessons for law enforcement and the public.
"We talk about human intelligence," said LAPD Deputy Chief Robert Green. "That comes from the community, things that don't look right, things are out of place."
In other words, if you see something, say something.
"Tips like that give us the edge to get ahead of it and stop it before it happens," said Green.
If you find yourself in the middle of an attack, there are survival strategies.
In the Paris concert venue, hundreds ran to safety.
Others hid behind bodies, or barricaded themselves in a room.
Remember three words: run, hide, fight.
"Get out. Don't stay there," said Green. "As soon as you see gunfire, protect yourself. If for some reason you can't get out, hide and hide well. Shut your cell phone off. Be prepared to be invisible if you can and lastly, if you can't get out and there's no way to hide, fight for your life. Don't become a victim. Don't let somebody walk up and shoot you."
Featherstone recommended grabbing anything -- a fire extinguisher or a chair -- to fend off an attacker.
Another survival tip: band together with others.
