Suspect In 'Random, Unprovoked,' Stabbing At Burbank Burger King Dies

BURBANK (CBSLA) – Two men, including the suspect, were wounded in a stabbing inside a Burger King restaurant in Burbank Tuesday morning described by authorities as random and unprovoked.

City News Service reported the suspect, identified as 36-year-old transient James Kagaoan, died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

The stabbing occurred before 11:20 a.m. at a restaurant located in the 500 block of Victory Boulevard. According to witnesses, the suspect entered the restaurant armed with a knife and began yelling incoherently. He then attacked a group of three friends who were having coffee, stabbing one of them, described by police as an elderly man.

"He started stabbing my friend," a man told CBS2. "He was crazy, I mean yelling, screaming... And of course my friend fell down. He comes to me, I hold a chair, put it back like that."

Another patron intervened and engaged the suspect in a struggle, during which Kagaoan suffered several stab wounds, police said. The Good Samaritan detained the suspect until officers arrived on scene.

"A black guy [came] in and [held] him down," said the man. "Otherwise, I would be dead today."

The elderly victim was rushed to a hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive. Kagaoan had been in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Good Samaritan who intervened was not hurt.
