SoCal Man Charged With Trying To Join Islamic State Terrorist Group

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California man previously charged with passport fraud now faces more serious terrorism-related charges.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that Adam Dandach tried to fly to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist group.

Dandach was indicted with trying to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and obstructing justice by trying to destroy records of his online activity.

Dandach previously pleaded not guilty to charges of lying on a passport application. He applied for an expedited passport because he said he accidentally threw out his old one. Authorities say his mother confiscated it to thwart his plans to go overseas.

He was stopped trying to board a flight to Turkey in July.

Prosecutors say Dandach told the FBI he believed killings of American soldiers were justified.
