Suspect Taken Into Custody, Baby Safe After Standoff In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Police have safely taken a baby from a robbery suspect who hid in a South L.A. apartment after allegedly robbing a 7-Eleven overnight, leading officers in a pursuit and crashing with an LAPD patrol car.

A 4-unit apartment building where the robbery suspect was believed to be hiding was evacuated and surrounded for hours Friday morning. The suspect was wanted in connection with a robbery at a 7-Eleven, 1916 South San Pedro, just before 3:30 a.m.

Police officials said the suspect was in contact with a SWAT team and was reported to have his 2-month-old baby with him.

During the pursuit, one suspect jumped out of the car and remains at large. The chase ended when the suspect's SUV collided with a police cruiser. The driver then ran into his apartment and grabbed his 2-month-old son.

At about 8:30 a.m., he made his way out of the apartment with the baby bundled in blankets and was immediately surrounded by officers in tactical gear. An officer walked the baby in the blankets to a SWAT vehicle, and later handed the child over to the mother.

When he was taken into custody, the suspect made a startling request for a cigarette, which officers obliged, CBS2's Dave Lopez reported.
