Should You Friend Your Boss On Facebook?

CHICAGO (CBS) — In a world of likes, pokes, and status updates, boundaries may be easily blurred between real life social circles and Facebook friends lists. So how does one avoid mixing business with pleasure in cyberspace?

Tracy Samantha Schmidt teaches seminars on how to maximize your Facebook skills. She suggests directing business contacts and colleagues to more professional leaning networks, such as LinkedIn.

"You should always be careful about colleagues because you want to maintain that professional boundary," Schmidt says.

And what should you do if your boss sends you a friend request?

"If your boss has friended you, the best thing to do is to accept the friendship and then limit what your boss can see," says Schmidt.

Facebook's newer privacy settings allow you to sort friends into groups, and then limit their access levels.

Given that many companies now monitor their employees' Facebook activity, it's important to keep in mind that posting nasty comments could cost you your job. And questionable photos on your profile may keep you from landing a job if they're seen by potential employers.

A good rule of thumb? Don't post anything on Facebook you wouldn't want your mom to see.
