Santa Monica's Landmark California Incline To Be Rebuilt

SANTA MONICA (AP) — A lengthy project is about to get underway to rebuild the California Incline — the landmark slanted road that connects the top of seaside Santa Monica's towering Palisades bluffs with Pacific Coast Highway down below.

The $20 million project aimed at bringing the 1,400-foot-long incline up to current seismic standards is expected to take at least a year to complete.

A 750-foot section that is technically considered a bridge will be demolished and replaced. The new structure will be more than 51 feet wide, an increase of more than 5½ feet, and include wider sidewalks and bicycle lanes.

The project is expected to have significant traffic impacts.
