San Clemente Approves $182K Park Restroom
SAN CLEMENTE (CBS/AP) — The city of San Clemente has approved a $182,000 park restroom despite criticism that it's dumping cash into an unneeded project.
The City Council voted Tuesday to fund a wheelchair-accessible restroom as an addition to Courtney's SandCastle. That's a playground designed for universal access for disabled children. It's part of a $23-million sports park now under construction.
Residents are speaking out about the costly project, with some calling the bathroom "ridiculous" because there are restrooms available at a nearby baseball field and aquatics center.
According to the Orange County Register, the mother of a 14-year-old girl with spinal muscular atrophy told the council that the restroom was necessary.
But critics say the playground is only 300-feet away from the next closest bathrooms and other parks lack even one toilet.
