Quake With Magnitude 4.4 Rattles Area Near Devore

DEVORE (CBSLA.com) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 later upgraded to 4.4 rattled the Inland Empire community of Devore on Tuesday evening, the USGS reports.

The initial quake shook the area about 2.5 miles south of Devore at 5:48 p.m., with several aftershocks shortly afterward, including one at 5:53 p.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 3.8.

No injuries or damage were initially reported, and likely little is expected.

"If you have damage from this, you have a pretty bad house," said Lucy Jones, a seismologist at Caltech in Pasadena.

The quake occurred in an area where two of Southern California's larger faults cross, Jones said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department stations immediately went into earthquake mode, meaning they roll equipment outside to keep it safe from possible falling debris and to keep it from being trapped inside in case it is needed.
