Public Memorial For Huell Howser To Be Held At Griffith Observatory
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A public memorial for fans of the late Huell Howser will be held next Tuesday at Griffith Observatory.
Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, who was sworn into office by Howser in 2001, planned the 3:30 p.m. ceremony for his longtime friend.
"Huell had a tremendous enthusiasm for California landmarks like the Griffith Observatory," said LaBonge. "And now we must say goodbye to our own California landmark, Huell Howser."
Howser, who hosted PBS' "California's Gold" for 19 years, died of natural causes at his Palm Springs home Sunday night.
He was known for his folksy demeanor as he highlighted California's small towns, landmarks and treasures.
Prior to his work at KCET, Howser was a reporter at KCBS (CBS2) and also worked as a weekend anchor and reporter for "Entertainment Tonight." He started his various PBS shows in 1985.
Howser retired from broadcasting last year due to health concerns.
