Portuguese Architect Souto de Moura Wins Pritzker Prize

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura is the winner of this year's Pritzker Architecture Prize, the top honor in the field.

In their announcement Monday, the Pritzker jury praised the 58-year-old architect for his ability to blend conflicting characteristics, such as power and modesty, and bravado and subtlety.

Among the projects mentioned by the jury were his stadium in Braga, Portugal, embedded in the side of a mountain, and the imposing concrete House Number Two in the town of Bom Jesus.

Souto de Moura is the second Pritzker laureate to be chosen from Portugal.

The formal Pritzker ceremony will be held in June in Washington, D.C. Souto de Moura will receive a $100,000 grant and a pair of bronze medallions.
