PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — It's that one-of-a-kind time of year again.

Pasadena's 37th Occasional Doo Dah Parade, the so-called "twisted sister" of the Rose Parade, had revelers marching up and down Colorado Boulevard in colorful costumes Saturday.

The parade began as a grassroots event in 1978 and gained national attention for its eccentric, satirical style.

Many now consider it a unique, SoCal way to kick off the holiday season.

"It's very diverse and everyone is just unique and awesome [and they're] not afraid to express it," spectator Judy Noval said.

The parade's grand marshal this year: "Johnny the Bartender."

Spectator Judy Soucie said she had a "great time" watching.

"We've been several years and it's amazing. It's always so much fun," she smiled.
