Trial Date Set For Palm Springs Woman Accused Of Trying To Cut Off Husband's Penis With Scissors

INDIO (CBSLA.com) — A trial date was set Friday for a Palm Springs woman accused of trying to cut off her husband's penis with heavy-duty scissors.

Virginia Valdez, 72,will face one count each of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and assault with a deadly weapon in the Dec. 3, 2011 attack on her then-62-year-old husband when she is tried on Oct. 10.

According to a police arrest warrant affidavit, Valdez and her husband were having oral sex when she announced that she had to brush her teeth, then "retrieved a pair of scissors and cut the victim's penis."

Her husband, identified only as "John Doe" in the criminal complaint, "got up in a panic and screamed in pain," Palm Springs police Detective Simon Min wrote in the affidavit.

The husband drove himself to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he told police that his wife had tried to cut off his penis, according to the affidavit. Police did not say whether the man suffered permanent damage, but wrote that he required "advanced medical (attention)" that included four stitches.

Valdez, who is free on $100,000 bail, was barred by a judge from having any contact with her husband, according to court records.

If convicted, Valdez faces up to nine years in prison.
