Orange County Named Healthiest In Southern California

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A new study has named the healthiest county in California and it is…..nowhere near Southern California.

The rankings released Wednesday by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that Marin County, in Northern California, is the healthiest county in California for the second year in a row.

The healthiest county in Southern California just happens to be named for a fruit. Orange County was ranked a 6, according to the study, which cited a high percentage for access to healthy foods and recreational facilities, among other factors.

Coastal counties from Sonoma to San Diego fared better than inland areas and rural northern counties of California.

The unhealthiest California counties include Del Norte, Trinity, Madera, San Bernardino and Kern.

Across the board, unhealthy counties also have significantly lower high school graduation rates, twice as many children in poverty, fewer grocery stores or farmers markets and significantly higher rates of unemployment.
