Mother Of Man Charged In Walk Of Fame Murder Says Incident Was A Matter Of Time

LOS ANGELES ( — The mother of a 26-year-old man charged in the stabbing death of a woman on Hollywood's Walk of Fame says she's not surprised her son would commit such an act.

The mother, a police detective in Tucson, said she had no idea her son, Dustin James Kinnear, had been arrested until she was contacted by CBS2 News.

She said her son is severely mentally ill.

"It's been a matter of when this would happen to be honest with you. I just couldn't get him the help he needed," she said.

Kinnear, of Los Angeles, is one of three transients charged in the fatal stabbing of Christina Calderon, who was involved in a dispute with the men after she took their picture Tuesday evening and they demanded she give them $1, according to investigators.

The LAPD Olympic Homicide detectives' investigation revealed Calderon, of Lynwood, was walking outside the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex with a male friend when the struggle erupted and Calderon was stabbed in the torso while her friend was restrained from helping her.

Calderon was transported to a local hospital where she died of her injuries.

Kinnear was charged with murder, while 33-year-old Jason Joel Wolstone, of Michigan, was charged with assault by means likely to produce bodily injury and two counts of accessory after the fact.

Thirty-four-year-old Brian Joseph Widdows, of Maryland, was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact.

All three men have prior records.

Kinnear had been convicted previously of assault and drug-related offenses.

Postings on a Facebook wall believed to be operated by the 26-year-old include messages reading: "Trying 2 quit smoking. Someone got 2 die", "Life sucks even when ur dead", and "Lost in my head and wishing I had a soul tonight" (sic).

His mother said if her son is guilty he should face the legal consequences.

"I'm not justifying what my son did," she said. "He needs to pay for it."

The men are expected to be arraigned Friday.
