Moreno Valley Police, Organization Foots The Bill To Replace Stolen Wheelchair

MORENO VALLEY (CBS) — Melika Wright's wheelchair was stolen from in front of her Moreno Valley home on Tuesday morning.

Her family was devastated. Wright has cerebral palsy and has had special needs since birth. Her mother Mildred says, "How could they? How could they do that?"

Melika's parents -- who have been married 48 years -- were told she wouldn't live past the age of 12.

Life has sometimes been hard, but Wright defied the odds. She's now 41.

The wheelchair meant a lot to her. It was literally her lifeline.

Her dad did what he always does on weekdays. Phillip Wright took Melika's wheelchair out to the driveway at 6:45 a.m. Just before 7 a.m. he walked Melika out to the bus that takes her to her special education class. And the wheelchair was gone.

The family figures someone stole it to sell it.

Today, the family learned that Good Samaritans will save the day. Better Living Mobililty and Moreno Valley police are picking up the tab on a new, custom-made wheelchair for her. Mildred says, "People are coming to our aid, that I thought would never..."
