Missing Woman, 95, Found After Being Taken From Convalescent Home

JEFFERSON PARK (CBSLA.com) — A woman reported missing from a convalescent home has been found safe.

The LAPD confirmed Tuesday that investigators found 95-year-old Flora Johnson, a dementia and Alzheimer's patient who was last seen being wheeled out of Western Convalescent Hospital on Sunday.

The woman's son, Charles Johnson, told KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen his mother had gone missing after a relative took her out of the facility without his knowledge.

"I'm very concerned that her health is deteriorating as we speak," he said.

Johnson said his cousin, Judy McGee, was permitted to remove his mother from the facility, despite not being authorized to do so.

He also contends administrators at the hospital failed to hand over surveillance clips that appear to have captured McGee, another woman and three children leaving with his mother, providing him with other security video instead.

"I feel that not only I but my mom have been betrayed in the sense of the security factor," he said.

The hospital's administrator, who would only speak off-camera, said McGee is well-known by staff from previous visits and that Johnson did not have a doctor's note to prevent her from having visitors.

The administrator also said she doesn't believe mistakes were made, although she did confirm McGee did not sign in or out on Sunday, as required by the facility.

Investigators and Johnson's son have acknowledged that Flora Johnson reached out to McGee to remove her from the convalescent hospital because she didn't like being there.

An LAPD spokesperson said she was found at a Victorville home after officers made contact with McGee over the phone. Flora Johnson was undergoing a medical examination to make sure she is OK before she is returned to the home.

Authorities are now determining whether or not charges will be filed in the case.
