Thousands Remain Without Power Following Substation Outage
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Thousands of residents were without power Thursday morning while crews worked to repair an unknown electrical problem in the San Fernando Valley.
As of mid-morning, 2,500 customers in Studio City, Sherman Oaks and Valley Village remained without electricity, according to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews.
The electrical problem was reported before 9 p.m. on Wednesday at a substation located in the 4200 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
"When the alarm went off it triggered an automatic power cutoff to those areas," LADWP spokesperson Vonda Paige said.
There was some early confusion between LADWP crews and firefighters at the scene, which delayed repair efforts.
The scene was initially declared "no entry" by LAFD for safety reasons due to the possibility that hot oil and potentially hazardous conditions existed, LADWP officials said.
Crews later found a feeder regulator located within the facility had failed and sprayed oil and other material throughout the area.
In total, the outage affected 8,700 customers.
Crews expect power to be completely restored by the end of the day.
