Voting Centers, Touchscreen Ballots: What's New

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) -Many California counties are making major changes to the way people will vote in person beginning with the March 3 Primary.. Millions of people will vote in entirely new locations, using radically different technology – and will be able to cast live ballots beginning 10 days before the election.

Riverside, Santa Barbara, AND Ventura counties Will keep the traditional polling place model of past elections.

Orange County will send every registered voter their ballot by mail and the voter will have options for how to return their ballot: either by mail, to any ballot drop box in the county, or at any vote center in the county convenient to them. These vote centers will replace traditional polling places.

JASMINE VIEL EXPLAINS the changes TO GET YOU READY…

JASMINE AT VOTING MACHINE: 11:58 (2 SHOT) the voter arrives sees touch screen have ballot goes right here… (CUT AWAY TO INSERTING BALLOT)

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS. ONCE YOU FEED YOUR UNMARKED PAPER BALLOT INTO THE MACHINE—YOU'LL PICK A LANGUAGE AND USE THIS TOUCH SCREEN TO MAKE YOUR SELECTIONS.
FOUR NAMES APPEAR ON THE SCREEN AT ONCE FOR EACH RACE – MAKE SURE YOU LOOK FOR THE "MORE" BUTTON – TO SEE IF THERE ARE MORE CANDIDATES IN THE SAME RACE. ONCE YOU'VE SEEN ALL THE NAMES – YOU CAN VOTE. THIS FEATURE IS CONTROVERSIAL – THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS HAS EVEN SUED OVER IT – CLAIMING THE FIRST FOUR CANDIDATES HAVE AN ADVANTAGE. THE REGISTRAR SAYS …….
(JASMINE AT MACHINE) 00:16:32 and now if there are more than four candidates on the page… hit more like that…

5:31 it's recognizing how we all function these days like doing google searches and this navigation uses that intutitive interface make choices and nagivage ballot but still prints out paper ballot

JASMINE AT MACHINE: 00:19:24 the voter then has the physical ballot in their hands to cast
LA COUNTY ELECTION OFFICIALS SAY THESE MACHINES AREN'T CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET AND DON'T RETAIN ANY VOTER INFORMATION…
---SOT---
04:39 any system using has potential for security risks so take that seriously //5:06 the Security of this comes in ballot itself—paper and human readable and audited after election
SOMETHING ELSE YOU'LL NOTICE THIS ELECTION?

6:08 biggest change for voters is 10 day voting period that moving away from a single day single location model of voting
