Man Gets 3 Years For Smuggling Drugs Inside Easter Eggs At LAX
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Miami man who smuggled cocaine hidden inside phony Easter eggs has been sentenced in Los Angeles to three years in prison.
A federal judge said Thursday she was giving 23-year-old Esteban Galtes a break before handing down the sentence. U.S. District Judge Valerie Baker Fairbank said she took into consideration his "somewhat limited" role as a drug mule transporting drugs from Colombia into the United States, and noted that he had no prior criminal record.
Galtes apologized to his family for all the shame he caused.
He was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport in December after officers searched his luggage and found 10 pounds of cocaine, much of it camouflaged as egg-shaped candies that he claimed were for his children.
