Man Charged For Beating Mother To Death With Shovel

SANTA ANA (AP) — A California man convicted last year of attempted murder for beating his 74-year-old mother with a shovel has now been charged with murder.

Orange County prosecutors say 49-year-old Robert Char is charged with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for use of deadly weapon. He will be arraigned Wednesday.

Last July, Char pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Joyce Char in her Fountain Valley home and he was sentenced to nine years on that charge and six years for elder abuse, resisting arrest and other allegations. Char told police he had a fight with his mother over chores around the house.

The woman was hospitalized in a coma until December, when she died.

If convicted of murder, Char faces 26 years to life in state prison.
