It's Crunch Time: LA Woman's Video Makes Finals In Doritos Superbowl Ad Competition

LADERA RANCH (CBSLA.com) — A Southland woman's video is among five finalists, having beat out thousands of entries, for a Doritos Superbowl ad competition.

Amber Gill, a voice coach in Ladera Ranch, produced the 30-second commercial "Cowboy Kid" with her husband, David, and thirty of their friends on a $5,000 budget.

She got inspiration for the ad's concept, sibling rivalry, from her two young sons.

Gill hired two young actors, Kascee Murdoch and Will Jennings, to play brothers racing to a bag of Doritos their mother brings home from the market.

Murdoch's character is dressed up like a cowboy who rides a massive dog to beat his brother to the chips.

The trained dog, "Ben" from Valencia, was the highest-paid actor on the set.

"Most of the budget went to the dog," Gill said.

She said they used a green screen to make it look like Murdoch was riding the dog.

"The moment they lifted up Kascee...I thought we have something here," David Gill said. "I turned to Amber and I said, 'I think we might win this competiton.'"

"And I said, 'Don't jinx it!'" Amber Gill said.

Murdoch says he loved playing a cowboy but was disappointed by one element of the shoot.

"I thought I needed to eat my Doritos and I didn't get to," Murdoch said.

"Do you like Doritos?" CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Stacey Butler said.

"Well, yeah, cause they're delicious!" the boy replied.

"Do you think you'll win?" Butler said.

"Yes, I'm hoping," Jennings said.

"Vote for me," Murdoch chimed in.
