PASADENA (AP) — A San Gabriel Valley man has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison for a baseball bat attack that left a teenager with brain damage.

Twenty-year-old Elijah Stinson of La Puente was sentenced Wednesday in Pasadena. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says he pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Prosecutors say that in 2008, Stinson walked up behind Jeffrey Cortinez and struck the 18-year-old South Pasadena High School student in the head with a bat.

Authorities say Stinson was angry at Cortinez, who'd been in a fight involving Stinson's friend.

Cortinez suffered severe brain injuries and needs round-the-clock nursing care.

Stinson's ex-girlfriend was the getaway driver. She got a three-year sentence after pleading guilty to assault in 2009 and is out on parole.
