Deputies in East Los Angeles fatally shoot man allegedly armed with handgun, sheriff's department says
Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have fatally shot a man who was allegedly armed with a handgun in East LA on Wednesday morning.
The sheriff's department said they received a call around 1:32 a.m. about a man claiming he wanted to harm himself inside a home in the 1400 block of Downey Road.
When deputies arrived, the man had allegedly barricaded himself inside. After contacting people at the home, the sheriff's department said the man, allegedly armed with a handgun, came out and a deputy-involved shooting took place. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies recovered the handgun, which was later determined to be a weapon that fired blanks, the sheriff's department said.
The LASD said based on the initial observations of the weapon, the incident was "deemed a qualifying event pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506." The California Department of Justice responded to the scene and will lead the investigation.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
