Illegal Poaching Boat Destroyed In Dramatic Video Footage
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An environmental group Monday released dramatic footage of the sinking of a illegal fishing vessel in Southeast Asia.
The Viking - the last of the "Bandit 6" toothfish poaching vessels targeted by the marine wildlife conservation group Sea Shepherd - was sunk in accordance with Indonesia law following its arrest by Indonesian authorities at the end of February, according to Sea Shepherd Asia director Gary Stokes.
The footage was captured in Pangandaran, West Java, with the help of drones.
Stokes was on hand for the sinking, which he says marks the end of over a decade of toothfish poaching in the Southern Ocean at the hands of the Bandit 6.
"Another of the Bandit 6 poaching vessels has met its end, this time at the hands of the Indonesian government," said Stokes. "Indonesia's uncompromising approach to stamp out IUU activity is reflective of a global swell against illegal fishing."
