Huntington Beach School Custodian Named As Outstanding Classified School Employee Of The Year
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A Huntington Beach elementary school custodian who helped police catch suspects in a series of arson fires on campus was named Tuesday one of California's six outstanding Classified School Employees of the Year.
Efren Barrera, 45, has been head custodian at College View Elementary School for 16 years.
"Mr. Barrera is an icon within the Ocean View School District," according to the California Department of Education's website. "Despite the many challenges facing a head custodian, Mr. Barrera maintains his quiet demeanor, positive attitude and infectious smile that makes him a favorite of teachers, staff and students."
Barrera set up a surveillance system on campus and worked with law enforcement to identify suspects in a string of overnight fires, the agency said.
He speaks to fourth-graders at the school annually about his quest to become an American citizen and his pride in raising and lowering the U.S. flag on campus each day, state officials said.
"Our schools would cease to function without the classified employees who keep them clean and safe, who make sure our students get to school and receive the proper nutrition once they are there, and who contribute to an overall positive school culture and caring environment," wrote state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. "Our 2016 Classified School Employees of the Year represent the very best of the best."
On March 10, students, faculty and staff at the elementary school recognized the custodian's achievement as a top school employee in Orange County with a surprise ceremony.
