Homeless Man's Parents File Claim Against Fullerton Over Police Beating

FULLERTON (AP) — The father of a California homeless man who died after a violent confrontation with police has taken the first step toward filing a lawsuit.

Ron Thomas filed a claim Thursday alleging violation of civil rights, negligence and conspiracy against the city of Fullerton and its Police Department.

Kelly Thomas was taken off life support on July 10. A bus surveillance tape showed agitated witnesses describing how officers beat and repeatedly used a stun gun on him.

No criminal charges have been filed against the six officers who are on paid administrative leave in connection with the case.

Ron Thomas, a former sheriff's deputy, says any settlement he might win will be donated to charities serving the homeless.
