High School Student, 17, Arrested For Allegedly Posting Threats On Facebook
LONG BEACH (CBS) — A 17-year-old student was arrested Thursday in Long Beach for allegedly posting threats on Facebook.
The boy, a student at Millikan High School, was taken into custody around 7 a.m. and police confiscated a computer and other devices from his home after his classmates reported threats posted on the social networking website, said Sgt. Rico Fernandez of the Long Beach Police Department.
Officers spoke to a girl about the threats Wednesday and later determined a suspect had befriended a group of friends on Facebook a week earlier, Fernandez said, adding that all the students attended Millikan.
"Over the next few days the subject made several threats to harm the students," Fernandez said. "Officers and detectives, concerned for the safety of the students and the school, worked diligently, conducting interviews and gathering information from various sources."
The boy, identified only as a 17-year-old, was booked at the Long Beach Police Department's Youth Services
Division and charged with making criminal threats and obstruction of justice.
He was later released to his parents.
"The Long Beach Police Department took immediate action upon notification of this incident to investigate the circumstances surrounding any potential for violence on the school campus," Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell said. "We will not tolerate any threats or behaviors with propensity for violence towards our students."
