Fountain Valley police shoot and kill man who was allegedly attacking an officer
Police shot and killed a man who allegedly attacked another officer in Fountain Valley on Friday morning.
The ordeal began at around 11 a.m. near Kazuo Masuda Middle School, located in the 17400 block of Los Jardines West, where officers learned that a man had unsuccessfully tried to get into a woman's car who was parked outside of the school, according to a statement from the Fountain Valley Police Department.
A witness who saw the incident called police.
Upon their arrival, the man ran from the area but one of the two responding officers quickly tracked him down by chasing on foot. The other officer remained in the squad car, FVPD said.
They say that the suspect attacked the officer who was in her squad car as she idled in the 17300 block of San Mateo Street. They have not disclosed if she got out of the car under her own power or if he dragged her out.
During the scuffle, the man was able to grab a gun, police said. They did not say if it was her service revolver or a gun that he already had when the incident began. At some point, he got into the patrol car while still holding the gun.
The second officer, whose partner was attacked by the man, opened fire on the suspect. He was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Police say that the squad car rolled into a U.S. Postal Service van as it idled with no one inside.
It's unclear if either officer sustained injuries.
