Former San Gabriel Mayor Won't Be Charged In Purse Snatching

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former suburban Southern California mayor won't be charged for a purse-snatching incident that led to a wild ride through streets with a woman clinging to his sport utility vehicle.

Then-San Gabriel Mayor Albert Y.M. Huang was arrested in October and booked for investigation of assault, robbery and battery.

But the Los Angeles district attorney's office told the Pasadena Star-News on Tuesday that Huang won't be charged because the alleged victim refused to cooperate with investigators.

Police Sgt. Brian Kott says the 35-year-old mayor and a woman were squabbling outside a dumpling restaurant when Huang fled in his SUV with her purse and the woman clinging to the side of the vehicle. Speeds reached 45 mph over more than a quarter-mile before the SUV was stopped.

Huang resigned as mayor days later.
