Former Immigration Official Charged With Taking Bribes To Speed Up Cases
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A former immigration official and his son have been convicted of taking bribes to speed up certain cases and wrongly providing authorizations for travel to and from the United States in others.
The government alleges that Fernando Jacobs and his son Patrick Anthony Jacobs used the former's position at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to receive payments to expedite cases. As part of the scheme, Jacobs Sr. obtained passport stamps for two Mexican nationals to travel to and from the United States.
Following a two-week trial, Fernando Jacobs was found guilty Tuesday of seven federal corruption charges and his son Patrick Anthony Jacobs was found guilty of six counts.
The father faces 110 years in federal prison, while the son faces 100 years when they are sentenced on Aug. 8.
