Firefighters Discover Skull While Battling Sherman Oaks Brush Fire

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters say they have discovered human remains while battling Saturday's firefighting efforts in Sherman Oaks.

The Los Angeles Fire Department determined the remains were a skull, which they found at the scene of the brush fire before 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of N. Coy Drive. The police and L.A. County Coroner's Office were notified.

The coroner's office later confirmed the remains found are indeed a human skull.  Coroner's office officials plan to be at the scene Monday to look for bones or more clues.

Neighbors wonder if it was a homeless person who once lived there, or a situation more gruesome.

"This is a surprise, this is a quiet canyon, there's not a lot of access up there," homeowner Dana Erickson said. "So this is a bit surprising something like that would be found up there."
