Firefighters Contain 3-Alarm Blaze At Big 5 Sporting Goods Store In Torrance

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters investigated the cause of a three-alarm blaze Friday that erupted within a sports equipment store in Torrance.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters were sent to the 18300 block of Hawthorne Boulevard for report of a fire burning inside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store, according to the Torrance Fire Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities located flames burning through the roof of the building.

Officials said crews were ordered off of the roof minutes before the structure partially collapsed.

Just before 9 p.m., a total of 44 firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said the scene was upgraded to a third alarm due to the size and intensity of the fire.

Arson investigators were called to assist at the scene as protocol.

Hawthorne Boulevard and Ashley Avenue were closed between 182nd and 186th streets during the firefight.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
